What is Throat Chakra?
In Sanskrit Throat chakra is called as Vishuddha chakra which means purifying. By inhaling fresh air and expelling toxins from the body, it purifies the physical and subtle body as well as purifies our thought, action and speech. As it is located in our throat, it controls the art of communication, expressiveness, singing etc. Verbal and physical expression is also controlled by the chakra.
Where is it located?
Throat chakra is located at the bottom of the neck, in the center of the voice box. So it affects our organs like communication, larynx, tongue etc. along with the surrounding thyroid glands. Communication here is not only with others, but also with oneself in order to communicate better emotionally and spiritually.

Throat Chakra sends Udana Prana throughout the body during breathing and cleanses the body of toxins. It is from this action that this chakra is named Vishuddhi Chakra.
The sixteen-petalled lotus seen in this chakra symbol represents the sixteen vowels of the Sanskrit language. This means that this chakra is the origin of the vowels. A downward facing triangle is a symbol of spiritual growth. As Throat Chakra is the first of the above three chakras, it is from here that the door to the spiritual world opens. The lower part of the triangle indicates the same and as you ascent higher the spiritual knowledge increases.
As you know this chakra near the larynx directly controls our expression, communication. Likewise, to grow spiritually, it is essential to know ourselves, connect and communicate with the self. Throat Chakra also plays a vital role in connecting with ourselves. In another sense, this chakra helps us discover our true identity. Hence it is directly associated with qualities like truth, clarity etc. Also enables creative expression of thought. It helps to develop the required knowledge and skills.

1. Mantra:
Some vibrations come out from the movement of the chakras. These vibrations become sound. Later it was recognized as seed mantras. In this the mantra of throat Chakra is ‘Hum’. Regular listening or chanting of this seed mantra can re-establish the power of Throat Chakra
2. Reciting Positive Affirmations:
Chanting positive sentences continuously for a certain time (10-15 minutes) will make our subconscious mind believe it and work to make it true. So the positive sentences given below can be used to awaken the Throat Chakra.
- “I speak fluently with confidence.”
- “Speak my thoughts clearly, easily.”
- “I balance between speaking and listening.”
- “I forgive myself for the mistakes I have made in the past.”
- “I tell the truth.”
- “Sharing my opinion is very important and necessary.”
- Take any of the above affirmations that resonates with you to chant it regularly.
3. Throat Chakra Meditation.
Meditation is a wonderful gift to mankind. Any problem can be solved by meditation. There are certain meditation practices specifically for activating the Throat Chakra. If that is not possible then meditate on Hum seed Mantra.
4. Use of Blue Color:
As this chakra is identified with the color blue, use more blue color in your home, room, blue screen, blue meditation seat, etc. Blue colored clothes can also be worn more and more.
5. Reiki
Sending Reiki towards the Throat chakra can activate it. This task is even easier if you are a Reiki practitioner. Non-reiki initiates can receive this treatment from a Reiki practitioner.
6. Yoga
Many of the asanas in our yoga practice stimulate the throat chakra. Some such asanas are Halasana, Supta Konasana, Sarvangasana etc. It is best to learn and practice these asanas from a good yoga teacher.
